ESS
Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a modern, minimally invasive method of treating chronic rhinosinusitis and other sinus diseases. The operation is performed with an endoscope – a fine optical camera that allows the doctor to accurately assess and treat the sinuses without making external cuts.
Fess is recommended if:
Stop taking blood thinners (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen) for 5 days before surgery, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
bring images of the computed tomography (CT) examination (if performed).
observe the fasting regime prescribed by the anesthesiologist;
it is recommended to stop smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery.
an endoscope and microsurgical instruments are inserted through the nasal passages without forming external scars;
widens the openings of the sinuses, ensuring normal ventilation and drainage of mucus;
removes polyps, scar tissue, or other structures that interfere with the function of the sinuses.
if necessary, other corrections are performed at the same time (for example, septoplasty or reduction of shells).
The operation usually takes 60–120 minutes.
stay in a day hospital or, if necessary, stay in the clinic under the supervision of specialists until the next day;
receive clear instructions on nasal care (regular rinsing with saline is especially important);
be informed of possible temporary symptoms (nasal congestion, minor bleeding, feeling of pressure);
receive information about the post-operative control visit.
Relief of symptoms and improvement in breathing usually become noticeable within a few weeks.
