Excision of a lesion in the nose, external ear canal, or oral cavity is a surgical procedure in which a benign or potentially malignant tissue growth is removed. The removed tissue is sent for histology so that its nature can be determined precisely and the need for further treatment can be assessed.

Excision is recommended if there is:

a lesion in the nose, such as a polyp, papilloma, fibroma, or another growth that blocks breathing or is visibly noticeable;
a lesion in the ear canal, such as a papilloma, atheroma, granulation tissue, or another growth that interferes with hearing or causes discomfort;
a lesion in the oral cavity, such as leukoplakia, a fibroma, cyst, papilloma, or another tissue change that may cause pain, swallowing difficulty, or oncologic concern.

How to prepare for lesion excision?

First step

Tell your doctor about allergies, especially to local anesthetics, and about all regular medication.

Second step

Stop blood thinners 5 days before the procedure unless your doctor has advised otherwise.

Third step

If the procedure is planned under general anesthesia, follow the fasting instructions from the anesthesiologist.

What happens during surgery?

assesses the borders and character of the lesion either directly or with an endoscope;

removes it precisely while preserving surrounding tissue as much as possible;

closes the wound, applies sutures, or uses electrocautery for hemostasis when needed;

sends the removed tissue for histological examination.

What to expect after surgery?

receives instructions on wound care and hygiene;

receives the histology result, usually within 1 to 2 weeks;

receives a further treatment plan based on the histology findings;

is informed about the follow-up visit.
