Sound-field audiometry

Sound-field audiometry is a hearing test in which sounds of different loudness and pitch are played through loudspeakers rather than headphones.

€40

It is particularly suitable when conventional audiometry using headphones cannot be performed, for example in young children.

Sound-field audiometry is recommended if:

  • a child's hearing needs to be tested, but they cannot yet cooperate sufficiently for conventional audiometry using headphones;
  • sound perception in a free sound field needs to be assessed;
  • headphones cannot be used or tolerated in the particular situation;
  • changes in hearing need to be monitored during rehabilitation.

How should you prepare for the examination?

To help ensure the examination is as accurate as possible:

  • bring previous audiograms or other hearing test results;
  • tell the specialist about the child's or adult's previous hearing tests;
  • it is advisable to explain to the child beforehand that they will need to listen to sounds and respond to them.

What happens during the examination?

During sound-field audiometry:

  • the patient is in a sound-insulated room;
  • sounds of different pitch and loudness are played through loudspeakers;
  • the patient responds when they hear a sound;
  • the specialist determines the sound perception threshold and evaluates the results.

For young children, the hearing test can be adapted to their age using games and tasks they understand.

What will you receive at the end of the examination?

The patient receives:

  • the examination results and a specialist explanation;
  • information about the measured hearing level;
  • recommendations for further hearing tests, treatment or rehabilitation, if necessary.
