Earwax removal is a quick and usually painless procedure for adults and children in which the specialist clears accumulated earwax from the ear canal. An earwax blockage is not only a hygiene issue. It can also cause sudden hearing loss, pressure, tinnitus, or even dizziness.

The procedure is recommended in order to:

  • restore hearing that has been reduced by the wax build-up;
  • relieve discomfort and the feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear;
  • reduce the risk of inflammation caused by irritation and trapped moisture;
  • allow the eardrum to be examined properly for diagnostic purposes.

How to prepare for earwax removal?

First step

Do not try to clean the ear yourself with cotton swabs, because that usually pushes the wax deeper and makes removal harder.

Second step

Tell your doctor if you have ear pain, discharge, or a history of eardrum perforation.

Third step

If the blockage is very hard, the doctor may advise using earwax-softening drops for 1 to 2 days before the visit.

What happens during the procedure?

During earwax removal, the specialist chooses the best method based on the density of the wax and the anatomy of the ear. This may include gentle irrigation with warm water, removal with micro-instruments under otomicroscopic control, or vacuum suction. The procedure is generally painless, although you may hear bubbling or feel water movement for a short time.

What will you receive at the end of the procedure?

immediate restoration of hearing clarity and relief in the ear;

advice on proper ear hygiene to reduce future wax build-up;

preventive recommendations if the ear tends to form blockages repeatedly.

Hearing usually improves immediately after the procedure. In rare cases, a short-lived sensitivity to sound or air flow may remain for a few hours.
