Nasal bone reduction

Nasal bone reduction is a procedure in which displaced or fractured nasal bones are returned to a more appropriate anatomical position.

€450

It is most commonly performed for nasal fractures when an injury has caused nasal deformity or functional difficulties and fewer than ten days have passed since the injury. The doctor assesses the need for reduction by considering bone position, swelling, nasal shape and breathing function.

Nasal bone reduction may be needed if an injury has caused:

  • a change in the shape or position of the nose;
  • displaced nasal bones;
  • difficulty breathing through the nose;
  • a nasal fracture with functionally significant deformity.

How should you prepare for nasal bone reduction?

Before the procedure, the doctor assesses the nasal and facial structures and the extent of the injury. Further examinations are prescribed if necessary.

Important:

  • tell the doctor about your medicines, particularly those affecting blood clotting;
  • report allergies and previous experience of anaesthesia;
  • follow the anaesthesiologist’s instructions on eating and drinking if the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.

What happens during the procedure?

Reduction is performed under general anaesthesia.

During the procedure, the doctor:

  • precisely assesses the position of the nasal bones;
  • restores their position using specialised instruments and controlled manipulation;
  • corrects associated nasal septum injuries if necessary;
  • stabilises the nasal bones after reduction where required.

What should you expect after the procedure?

After nasal bone reduction:

  • nasal swelling and bruising may occur;
  • nasal breathing may be temporarily difficult;
  • nasal packing or external fixation is used if necessary;
  • the patient receives instructions on nasal care and restrictions on physical activity;
  • a postoperative follow-up appointment is scheduled.

The doctor determines the timing of nasal bone reduction individually, because excessive delay after a fracture can make repositioning the bones more difficult as they heal.
