Myringoplasty / Tympanoplasty (prosthesis not included)

excluding prosthesis cost

€1000

Myringoplasty is the surgical closure of an eardrum perforation. It restores the protective barrier of the middle ear, can improve hearing, and helps reduce the risk of repeated infections. Tympanoplasty is a more extensive procedure that combines eardrum reconstruction with ossicular reconstruction or prosthesis placement when needed.

The listed price covers the surgical procedure only. The cost of the prosthesis is calculated separately.

Myringoplasty or tympanoplasty is recommended if you have:

  • an eardrum perforation caused by inflammation, trauma, or chronic middle ear disease;
  • chronic middle ear inflammation with discharge or infection caused by the eardrum defect;
  • hearing loss caused by a perforation or damaged hearing ossicles;
  • a need to prevent fluid build-up and repeated inflammation.

How to prepare for myringoplasty or tympanoplasty?

First step

For at least 3 to 4 weeks before surgery, the ear canal should stay dry and free of active infection. If you notice discharge, inform your doctor.

Second step

Follow the fasting instructions provided by the anesthesiologist.

Third step

Tell your doctor about your medications, allergies, and any previous experience with anesthesia.

Fourth step

Complete a preoperative hearing test if audiometry has not yet been performed.

What happens during surgery?

takes a tissue graft, usually from the patient’s own cartilage perichondrium or fascia, to rebuild the eardrum;

reaches the middle ear through the ear canal or a small incision behind the ear;

lifts the eardrum and places the graft under the perforation to support proper healing;

reconstructs the ossicular chain as part of tympanoplasty if that is necessary.

The procedure usually takes 60 to 120 minutes.

What to expect after surgery?

recovers in the day hospital or under extended postoperative monitoring, up to 24 hours depending on the extent of surgery;

receives instructions on protecting the ear from water and pressure changes, including avoiding swimming and flying during the first weeks;

is informed that hearing improvement may become noticeable after several weeks, while full assessment is usually made after 12 weeks;

receives information about the postoperative follow-up visit.
