Fibrolaryngoscopy is a modern and accurate upper respiratory tract examination method for both adults and children. During the examination, the specialist uses a thin, flexible optical instrument – a fibrolaryngoscope – to look at the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, pharynx, larynx and vocal cords in detail. This examination allows timely diagnosis of mucosal inflammations, changes in the vocal cords, polyps or formations, as well as an objective assessment of swallowing and voice functions.

Fibrolaryngoscopy is recommended for patients with:

voice changes: prolonged hoarseness or loss of voice
swallowing problems: difficulty swallowing or a feeling of a “ball” in the neck
breathing problems: shortness of breath or stridor (loud and difficult breathing)
chronic complaints: prolonged cough and other complaints without clear cause.

Timely diagnosis allows you to more accurately identify the cause of the problem and initiate appropriate treatment.

How to prepare for a fibrolaryngoscopy examination?

First step

do not eat or drink for at least 1–2 hours prior to the visit.

Second step

inform your doctor about allergies (especially to local anaesthetics) and medications you take on a daily basis, such as blood thinners.

What happens during a fibrolaryngoscopy examination?

if necessary, perform local anaesthesia by spraying a spray into the nose or throat to reduce sensitivity and prevent retching reflex;

introduced through the nose into the thin flexible endoscope with the camera to see a high-resolution image on the screen;
checks the mobility of the vocal cords, the condition of the mucous membrane and excludes structural changes (polyps, nodules and other formations);
explains the results, as the patient can see the image on the screen and receive an immediate comment on the visible condition.

Important: After the examination, there may be some discomfort in the nose or throat that goes away within 30–60 minutes. As long as the anaesthetic effect persists (throat numbness), do not eat or drink to avoid the risk of choking.
