Tympanostomy for children (pediatric surgery)

pediatric surgery

€300

Tympanostomy for children is a small surgical procedure in which a tiny ventilation tube is inserted into the eardrum. The tube keeps the middle ear ventilated and helps drain fluid that has collected because of otitis media or related conditions. In children, the procedure is performed under mask anesthesia or general anesthesia, often together with adenoidectomy or tonsillotomy.

The procedure is recommended if the child has:

  • recurrent middle ear infections that do not respond sufficiently to medication;
  • secretory otitis media with fluid persisting for more than 3 months without active infection;
  • hearing loss caused by fluid or pressure imbalance in the middle ear;
  • speech development difficulties related to reduced hearing.

How to prepare for pediatric tympanostomy?

First step

Follow the anesthesiologist’s instructions about food and drink before surgery.

Second step

On the morning of surgery, the child should not eat or drink, except for a small sip of water approved for essential medication.

Third step

Tell your doctor about the child’s allergies, medication, and chronic illnesses.

Fourth step

Parents should stay calm, because a reassuring presence helps the child feel safe.

What happens during the procedure?

makes a very small incision in the eardrum;

suction-clears fluid from the middle ear;

places a small plastic, silicone, or metal tube to keep the ear ventilated.

The procedure usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

What to expect after the procedure?

usually recovers quickly from anesthesia and can go home the same day;

receives instructions on protecting the ears from water, including ear plugs for swimming when recommended;

is scheduled for follow-up monitoring.

Improved hearing is often noticeable within a few days.
