Combined adenoidectomy and tonsillotomy

Combined adenoidectomy and tonsillotomy is an ENT operation in which enlarged adenoid tissue is removed and enlarged palatine tonsils are reduced in size.

€600

This combined treatment may be performed in children when enlarged adenoids and tonsils obstruct breathing, particularly during sleep. Adenoidectomy and tonsillotomy at LORENT are performed under general anaesthesia.

Surgery may be recommended if the child:

  • continually breathes through the mouth;
  • snores markedly or has pauses in breathing during sleep;
  • experiences difficulty breathing during sleep;
  • has recurrent middle-ear problems or hearing loss associated with enlarged adenoids;
  • is markedly tired or sleepy during the day because of sleep disturbances.

How should you prepare for surgery?

To help surgery proceed safely:

  • follow the anaesthesiologist’s recommendations on eating and drinking;
  • on the morning of surgery, the child must not eat or drink, except for a small amount of water for taking medicines agreed with the anaesthesiologist;
  • tell the doctor about allergies, chronic conditions and medicines;
  • bring the necessary medical documents and the anaesthesiologist’s consultation report.

What happens during surgery?

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. During it, the doctor:

  • accesses the adenoids and palatine tonsils through the mouth, without external scars;
  • removes enlarged adenoid tissue;
  • reduces the size of the palatine tonsils while preserving their capsule;
  • carefully controls bleeding.

The duration of surgery depends on the extent of the procedures required.

What should you expect after surgery?

Following adenoidectomy and tonsillotomy, the child:

  • is monitored during the postoperative period;
  • receives instructions on diet, fluid intake and rest;
  • may experience throat discomfort or pain, particularly when swallowing;
  • receives instructions on medicines and a follow-up appointment.

Nasal breathing and sleep quality usually improve gradually after surgery.
